Have you ever been to T.G.I. Fridays? I haven’t. But apparently they have an fried green bean appetizer with a wasabi cucumber ranch dip. Although I’ve never tried this in the actual restaurant, I did try a sample of it at Sams Club. They sell the infamous TGI Friday green bean fries. And let me just save you the trouble now of buying these.. they were awful.

With that said, my mom has been making these type of fries for a long time. In fact every time my daughter goes to her house, she requests these fries and like a good grandma, she delights in making it for her.

So here is my version. I made this last night. The beans lasted all of 5 minutes and poof! – they were gone. But we had plenty of the dip left over and it I’m so glad for it. I’ve been dipping potato chips, carrot sticks, and spreading it on bagels. I can’t wait to make a roast beef sandwich with it. So here you go, a nice appetizer to start the weekend. TGIF!

Panko Friend Green Beans with Wasabi Cucumber Ranch dip

Ingredients

Green Beans

1 egg, beaten
1/2 cup milk
8 ounces fresh green beans
1 cup flour
1 cup panko crumbs
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon garlic powder
2 cup vegetable oil ( used half vegetable and half olive oil)

Wasabi Cucumber Ranch Dip

1/2 cup bottled ranch dressing
1 cucumber – peeled, seeded, minced
2 tbs sour cream
2 teaspoons prepared horseradish
1 teaspoon cider vinegar
2 teaspoons wasabi paste
1/4 cup of cilantro
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 pepper
1 pinch cayenne pepper

Combine all the ingredients in a food processor and pulsate for 1 minute. Transfer the dip into a bowl and place in the refrigerator.

Wash and trim green beans. In 3 medium bowls, place flour, salt, and garlic powder in one bowl. In the second bowl mix the egg and milk together. In the third bowl place panko crumbs.

Heat oil in a medium skillet to medium high heat.

This is a 3 step process. First coat the beans in the flour, then wash them in the egg mixture, and then place the beans in the panko crumbs.

Fry the beans in oil until golden brown. Remove from heat and place on a paper towel covered plate. Transfer to serving dish and serve with wasabi cucumber ranch dip. Enjoy!

I love green beans. Sometimes they are very expensive in AU, but luckily they are very cheap right now. I can eat more at the moment.

I just got a new set up for deep frying and have been desperately wanting a savory recipe to use it for. Perhaps this post is a sign….

I actually love those TGIF green bean fries. The location by me does a good job with them and the wasabi mayo is great with them. TGIF’s is where my hubby takes me when I’m having a bad day, and I’ll usually order that one appetizer as my meal (at least I’m getting a full serving of veggies!) I also started making wasabi mayo at home but my recipe is really simple: Hellman’s/Best Foods mayo, wasabi paste, sugar and some water to thin out the consistency.

PF Chang’s also makes a tempura green bean appetizer, but I find it’s kinda greasy and usually oversalted.

Major props for making a home version. Looks delicious!

Thanks for all the comments everyone. I’m still grubbing on the dip.. just a little left though.

ReCessipes: I bet asparagus would be tasty too. I love tempura so I’m betting any vegetable would work.

Phyllis: In all fairness I haven’t tried the TGIF version in the restaurant.. only the frozen version they carry at Sam’s Club. They were sampling it one day and it wasn’t good at all. The beans were soggy and I didn’t like it. I may start having to make wasabi mayo like you described. Sounds good!

S.Stockwell: I bet these will fair well with your guests. They’ll disappear quick on you though!

I would not have though about breaded fried beans but they sound good. The dipping sauce sounds really tasty as well.

I made these and they were super delicious. I added some crushed french fried onions to the breading though and they really worked. I remember the ones at the restaurant having a particularly onion-y flavor. Anyway, thanks for the recipe! The dip was spot-on.

Looks yummy!
How many serving is this? I wanted to make this for about 6-8 people…

Alice April 20, 2011 at 6:23 pm

Hi Emily,
You’ll want to at least double or triple the green bean portion of the recipe but not the dip.

I have just discovered your blog and LOVE it! I was searching for photos of the foods I am hoping to have at my wedding reception in June. I am considering your fried green bean recipe. (Our wedding is a “Southern Charm” theme, so I think these would be perfect!) Do you know if the beans get soggy quickly? It is something that would need to be made on-site or could it be prepared ahead of time?

Thanks for a great blog!

Hi Melissa,
Honestly, they aren’t as good as when they are hot and crisp. You could served them cold but it wouldn’t be as good. :(

Can you put these in the oven instead of frying?

Reply

alice March 8, 2012 at 3:55 am

Hi Heather,
I’m sure you could but it wouldn’t taste the same. I couldn’t offer you cooking times since I have never tried.
