Since I started blogging I’ve always wanted to do a post on my chocolate chip cookies. You see.. my chocolate chips are all that and a bag of pretzels. But the problem is, EVERYONE and their grandma think their chocolate chip cookies are the best. So I decided I wouldn’t do a post because it seemed overplayed (putting it mildly). I just didn’t have it in me to enter the “I have the best chocolate chip cookie recipe” rat race.
But months ago I had asked the question on Twitter on why people believed their recipe was really the best. And from that moment on, Ashley Rodriguezand I would engage in the “Chocolate chip cookie Tweet wars”. I asked her to post her recipe and she kindly pointed me to her beautiful site. I made her recipe that same evening and I must say they were incredibly good. I reported back my results to her and said this.. “They were really good, almost as good as mine.” Her next tweet went something like this, “Almost?” – a.k.a “Say what?!?” Because we’re good friends and lovingly joke around a lot with each other, I can tell you that she really does have a fabulous recipe. But I can also tell you with bold confidence, my recipe is pretty fierce – if I do say so myself. The reason why I love this recipe is because it is not overly sweet and primarily uses brown sugar. The brown sugar gives it a more caramel type chewiness and more depth than the traditional Toll House type of recipe. As a result, you get a nice crisp bottom, but the rest of the cookie is soft and chewy.
These are the cookies my sister who lives in Germany asks me to send her because they are all she can think about when she thinks of home. They are the same cookies she shared with her platoon in Iraq and the same cookies I will be sending to her in Afghanistan. I once sent her a batch of a new recipe and trust me, she noticed. I was told not to deceive her again and send my version only.
But last night it happened again. It all started out so innocently. A typical night of tweeting and before I knew it, somehow I had trash tweeted my way into a chocolate chip cookie bake off with my good friends Lorna Yee and Ashley Rodriguez. If I recall correctly, the conversation went something like this.
Me to Ashley: Bring It!
Ashley to Me: Oh I’ll Bring It!
And before I knew it, other people were arranging a bake off. Moral of the story.. do not tweet and trash if you can’t back it up. And for the record, I can back it up. Enough said.
I present to you my favorite and original Chocolate Chip Cookie recipe. Enjoy!
- 1 cup (2 sticks) salted butter, softened
- ½ cup sugar
- 1½ cup packed brown sugar
- 2 eggs
- 2 tsp. vanilla extract
- 2¾ cups (12 oz) all-purpose flour *If at all possible, please weigh the flour
- ¾ tsp. smallish-medium coarse sea salt
- 1 tsp. baking soda
- 1½ tsp. baking powder
- 2¼ cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
- Preheat oven to 360 degrees. Cream butter, sugar, and brown sugar until it is nice and fluffy (approx. 3 minutes on medium-high speed on a K-5). Add both eggs and vanilla and beat for an additional 2 minutes. Add baking soda, baking powder, salt, and flour until cookie batter is fully incorporated. Finally add chocolate chips until well distributed. The cookie batter should be somewhat thick. Drop about 2 tablespoons of dough or use a medium cookie scoop and plop the batter onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake for 12-14 minutes until the edges are nice and golden brown. Remove from heat and allow the cookies to stay on the cookie sheet for an additional 2 minutes. Pick up the parchment paper with the cookies still on top and transfer to a cool non-porous surface. Allow the cookies to cool on the paper for at least 3 minutes before serving. Enjoy!
*Troubleshooting*
-If you’re cookies are coming out flat and not like the pictures there are probably 3 reasons for this.
#1) Baking powder and Baking soda is old. If your baking powder and soda is older than 1 year and has not been in a sealed (preferably air tight) container, it has lost some of it rising qualities.
#2) Creaming. It is not enough to just cream the butter and sugars until it has come together. This recipe requires you to beat it with a mixer for 3 minutes until the texture of the butter and sugar turns to light and fluffy-just like the picture.
#3) Flour. Flour should be weighed. This can make or break the recipe because just scooping flour into a measuring cup will never yield ideal or consistent results.

The recipe was great! I like the buttery flavor and crispy outside. I think the parchment paper directions really rocked the recipe. I did not realize what a difference it makes to remove the cookies from oven, let sit for 2 mins, then remove the cookies along with the parchment paper. Great advice, Thanks for the recipe.
This recipe looks great! I just have 1 question. Do I need to follow the parchment lined sheets method, cause I’m kind of a die hard silpat fan. Would they fall apart if I just transferred them to cooling racks?
Krissipoo- Silpad works great too. Just let them cook for a few minutes on the pad before transferring.
These were really good, thanks for sharing the recipe. The actual taste to me isn’t much different than any other chocolate chip cookie I’ve had but the texture is perfect!
I made these tonight and they are wow! I’ve been a devotee of the Jacques Torres/NY Times choc chip recipe but I have to say yours is better.
Wow, what a great recipe and the directions are PERFECT!! Of course, I didn’t have everything I needed at home, so I subbed 1 stick of margarine and then felt I needed to add 2 heaping tbsp. of flour to compensalte. I am a former home ec. teacher and these are the best looking cookies ever! They also taste great!
Well,”BEST EVER” always incites a challenge to the tastebuds, so I baked a batch of yours as well as Ms. Ashley’s, and what can I say? Got an tummy ache trying to make a decison, so it’s a 50/50 split, both damn good, depends on what your discriminating palate desires. Will be putting yours on the list (along with my faves the NYT and CI recipes). Thanks for sharing!
These cookies are amazing! I agree that the brown sugar/sugar ratio make this cookie the best. The crunchiness of the bottom and the chewiness of the top are what make it just delightful! I will definitely keep this in my recipe box! Amazing!
These cookies are simply amazing! The perfect texture / flavor / sweetness. The tip on baking soda / baking powder was great because I have been tryign to figure out why my cookies had been coming out flat. Thanks for the exceptional recipe.
We LOVEEEEE the cookies! they are HANDS down the best!!! Thanks soooo much for shearing them with us!!!!:)
So excited, these cookies came out just the way I’d hope for chocolate chips! I would normally use the standard recipe on the back of the chocolate chips bag, although they’d come out flat and just not tasty majority of the time. Glad I found this recipe, it is definitely what I will use from now on. They taste as great as they look. Thanks so much for sharing!!
These are my favorite chocolate chip cookies! I made them today and shared some with my neighbor. Her son said they were the best he has ever had!:)
So I made these today and they turned out amazing!!! I tried the batter before baking and the vanilla was pretty strong but after baking it was perfect. I did 1 1/4 cup of white chocolate chips and a cup of milk chips because the boyfriend requested it and it was just delicious!!!! My new favorite cookie recipe!!!
Delicious! Best chocolate chip cookies I’ve made by far! Thanks for sharing R
I just made these cookies tonight and my family loves them! they are the best I’ve ever made. Thank you so much. It’s definitely becoming a traditional cookie at our home…for any occasion!
Is unsalted butter going to make much of a difference?
Thanks, Tracy
I tried it with unsalted butter and it came out fine. The vanilla just tasted a little too strong. But over all the cookies were a hit in our house!:)
These cookies are lovely! I made them yesterday, and my family fell in love with them! Thank you for sharing your recipe . <3 ^.^
well the recipe went well but after baking the sea salt was still there and now we have salty cookies…fucking fantastic.
OH MY GOSH!I LOVED THIS COOKIES!!!I made choco chip cookies all the time and i never found a good recipe but, this was was pretty awesome. The texture, the taste. What can i say?I will be doing this recipe alot more.
I’m 13 and I made these cookies and everyone I gave them to was amazed. They are delicious and not too difficult to make! I am definitely keeping this recipe
Holy bejeebus, these are some delicious freakin’ cookies. This is now my go-to chocolate chip cookie recipe. Thanks for sharing.
Hi Alice
What brand of sea salt did you use in this recipe. Also, what brand of salted butter did you use.
These truly are THE best chocolate chip cookies! I don’t think I will ever try another recipe, this is the ONE! Thank you for the recipe!
Made threes last night at 11pm. LOL! HAD A CRAVING. These are BY FAR the best cookies I have EVER made… from scratch or otherwise!!!! I like to dig up different recipes and follow them perfectly. The resulting dish doesn’t always turn out as expected. HOWEVER, this recipe EXCEEDED my expectations!!!! The texture, the flavor, the appearance… perfect. My husband of 11 years who has been my willing guinea pig absolutely agrees. You’re right that your cookies are the BOMB. Thanks for sharing.
Can’t rate using the site, but FIVE STARS!!!!!!
I’ve made this recipe twice now. The first one turned out so well that the family requested it again a week later. These are great. I used kosher salt and weighed out the flower. Very good flavor and texture. It might be my oven or the fact that I’m at 6000 feet but I only baked mine for 11 minutes. Thanks for sharing this wonderful recipe.
Oh my goodness. Can I tell you these are hands down the best cookies I’ve ever made?! And to top it off, there were so easy to make! An online mom’s group I’m a part of is having a sort of “virtual baking party” as of yesterday and a lot of of us have been baking these cookies and we all agree they are to die for! Thanks for sharing the love!
I just wanted to let you know (and I know you are fully aware) that these cookies are THE BOMB. So many years searching for THE chocolate chip cookie recipe, thinking there was no such thing…proven wrong by this recipe. I also posted the link to your recipe on a mom’s group that I’m part of…well…it started a cookie frenzy – so many people baked them right away, and more are planning on it today and this week! So funny! Thanks again, you made a lot of people very happy!
You rocked my world last night… and this morning… and now i have go give them away because if i dont, i WILL eat them ALL!
Im in the moms group that Zoe shared your recipe in… we all went crazy for these… especially the pregnant women
)))))
buttery-salty-melt-in-your-mouth-goodness-amen!
I don’t bake…ever. Yet I’m part of this amazing moms group and they are making me want to run out, shop, and give it a try! You use the oven for baking, right? ; )
I have maldon salt and kosher salt. Which should I use?
Hi Annie,
Either or works great!
I saw this link today on “The Art o Doing Stuff” and HAD to try it. My husband loves chewy chocolate chip cookies but I’ve not been successful in finding a good recipe. The texture of these cookies is perfect but I still find them ridiculously sweet (I’m just not a fan of sweets). Do you think they would still turn out if I eliminated the white sugar?
Thanks!
Liz
Yep, I made these this morning and they are pretty dang close to perfect (I like nuts, but alas no one else that I will be sharing with likes them). Perfect texture. Thanks dear!
I’m not one to normally comment, but after baking (and eating a few too many) them I couldn’t resist! I stumbled across this blog when searching for a new choc. chip cookie recipe and I loved the alterations you have made in this. I agree with everyone that these are HANDS DOWN the tastiest cookies… and I will definitely be making this one regularly because they were such a big hit! Thank you thank you for sharing!!
I haven’t been able to bake a great batch of chocolate chip cookies for years…until now!!! These are WAY better than my old recipe. Thank you for the added assist with explaining why the cookies won’t rise. Absolutely Delicious!!
Hello! Google led me to this recipe, and I made it to enter in a chocolate chip cookie contest at my church. And I WON THE GRAND PRIZE! So, it is true. They are the best cookies ever.
I added 1/8 tsp orange oil + zest of two oranges, then dipped the cookies in melted chocolate and sprinkled that with more orange zest and a little sea salt. THANK YOU for the recipe!!
These cookies are the absolute best! Our niece asked me to make chocolate chip cookies for her party. I haven’t made cookies since high school, so I researched recipes all week and after reading several of them and their reviews, I chose this one. I am so glad I did! My husband walked in the door and commented about the delicious smell as they were baking. He went wild after tasting them as I did! I followed the directions exactly, but made a mistake and put in 1 1/2 tsp of table salt, not realizing I was to reduce the amt if not using sea salt. It really made no difference; they were yummy just the same. Thank you so much for this recipe. It was fabulous!! I can’t wait for our niece to taste them!
Well….I just learned the lesson waxed paper is NOT the same as parchment paper! Oops!
. I got one good batch made though….not sure if it’s safe to eat the others. They were awesome cookies though!! Gonna have to try again and be smart this time… :p
Made these last night and only had 2 cups flour so I had to used ground almonds and ground oatmeal to equal 3/4 cup and was worried! No need to worry they turned out fabulous. Used 1 tablespoon dough for my cookies and they were perfect size for me and everyone loved them Will make again and use the flour as stated to see the difference. A keeper
I make a batch of CC Cookies at least twice a month for the small corporate kitchen that I work for. Usually the Nestle T House kind. This recipe was good but I think I still like the NTH better. But I love the salt/sweet ratio going on. Plan to do to a taste test and see how they go over at work. They are big food people. I know that they never met a cookie they didn’t like!
I made homemade cookies once but they didnt flatten out. Then I tried these and they came out perfectly!!
Wow! Wow! Wow! WOW!
I’m pretty fussy when it comes to cookies and brownies and must say I’d never found a 5 star recipe for choc chip cookies. To me there was always something missing, not enough choc chips, not chewy enough, not buttery enough, not crunch enough (I told you I was fussy) but these are definitely quality stuff. A great texture, a great flavor – delicious. This will be a staple in my baking tin. Thank-you.
Love, love, love these cookies! I actually added 2 1/2 cups of chocolate chips. I also liked the sea salt taste.
I’ve actually just started baking this summer and have no experience. While looking for the best chocolate chip cookie recipe, Google immediately showed me this one, and I gave it a go. Since summer started, I’ve used it 5 times and though, I’m sure mine will never be as perfect as Alice’s, these chocolate chip cookies are really the bomb! I tried some other recipes, as well, but none of them came, for me, anywhere close to this recipe, so thank you so much for sharing.
I have only unsalted butter – what is a good amount of additional table salt to add (besides the wonderful sea salt!) to compensate?
Hi..Going to try these cookies right now..Question about parchment paper..I usually just leave the parchment paper on the cookie sheet and use it for all batches. So, I take these off the cookie sheet on the parchement paper, so do I have to use a new sheet of parchement for each batch, and how many cookies do you get from this recipe? Also, I have fine sea salt, is that ok? thanks so much
I’ve made these cookies a few times already this summer and EVERYONE loves them. This is truly the best choco chip cookie EVAAR! Thanks for sharing.
I tried this recipe a few weeks ago and I loved the taste but they were just too flat. I went out and bought new baking powder and soda and I just made a abtch and they turned out amazing! I only cooked them for 10 minutes, but that could be because of my oven. I have been on the search all summer for the best chocolate chip cookie recipe and I have finally found it! Thank you so much!!!
Okay you. You….you Alice person. I’m so mad at you. Why? Because these are the BEST FREAKIN’ COOKIES KNOWN TO HUMANKIND and I can’t stop making them. I blame YOU for the size of my butt right now. You…..you….yoooooouuuuu fantabulous cookie recipe person you!
I’m filing suit. I’m suing you for awesomeness.
(Thankyouthankyouthankyou for sharing your recipe!)
I won’t lie, I did make some changes to the recipe because I was feeling like experimenting, but the basic recipe was the same, and they turned out incredible. Thanks for sharing this! I was in desperate need of a midnight snack and these hit the spot!
Has anyone tried this recipe without the brown sugar?….I want to try this tomorrow but I hate that I can’t find brown sugar where I live
This is, hands down, the BEST chocolate chip cookie recipe. EVER!
