{Cookbook Review}The Pioneer Woman Cooks: Recipes from an Accidental Country Girl

Like millions of others out there, I love Ree Drummond a.k.a “The Pioneer Woman”.  Her ability to share her writing and giftings with the world in such an authentic manner is why I love and admire her so much. She is humble, funny, and generous and it shows in her blog. I’ve always appreciated how she comes along side her readers giving them the encouragement they need to learn something as if she is your dearest friend and biggest cheerleader. She is for them, she is for me. Never does she speak down to her readers with a voice of “expert” but as one who passionately loves to share the good things in life with her audience.

Last month I had the privilege of finally meeting her in San Francisco during Blogherfood.  She is even more wonderful, gracious, and genuine than I could have imagined.  So it was with much anticipation I looked forward to her cookbook being released tomorrow.  And fortunately for me as an attendee of the conference I was able to receive a preview copy.

In her cookbook “The Pioneer Woman Cooks: Recipes from an Accidental Country Girl“, readers will recognize Ree’s familiar voice of friend and coach.  Each recipe in this cookbook is real country cooking in all its glory.  None of the dishes are over complicated, just simple home cooking at its finest.  My husband calls it “man food”. And for the record, he lives for man food!  Honestly, her recipes are similar to the ones his grandma used to make for him growing up and he was very fond of Granny Gayle and her cooking.  But now Granny Gayle is cooking with the angels in Heaven but her cooking lives on in our home through Ree’s cookbook.

One cannot help but imagine being transported to Ree’s Ranch when preparing and eating these dishes. Every dish has detailed step-by-step photos (tons of photos!) and instructions making it virtually impossible for home cooks to fail.  The recipes are not hard to execute and many of the ingredients are items likely in your home already.

Earlier in the week I prepared Skillet Cornbread from her cookbook and it was wonderful!  The recipe can be found here.  Coincidentally, tomorrow  is  my birthday which is the official release date of Ree’s cookbook.  As a pre-birthday celebration, yesterday my husband with the help of my daughters (who know how to operate my Kitchenaid)  surprised me by baking Ree’s French Breakfast Puffs out of her cookbook.    To some, this would not seem like a big deal, but for me it is totally a big deal!  Just as an FYI, my husband does not cook or bake.  You could imagine my shock when the kids brought a plate of muffins to my bed and he explained they baked these for me.  They were a huge hit in our family!! If Rob can bake these, anyone can bake and cook out of this cookbook. Thank God Ree included lots of pictures to help him!  On a funny note, Rob documented the whole process with my camera while I was sleeping. (Notice the kids birthday candle?!)

This cookbook is a gift of love.. from her family to yours.  I would highly recommend this cookbook for anyone who loves real home cooking like chicken fried steak, buttermilk biscuits and red velvet cake.  Her photos, story-telling, and recipes will make this cookbook a treasured piece in your kitchen.  Get your Holiday shopping done early and order a few copies now! Perfect timing for Christmas presents!

For 1 lucky person, I am giving away a SIGNED COPY of  “The Pioneer Woman Cooks: Recipes from an Accidental Country Girl“  All you have to do is leave a comment about your favorite home-style dish or why you love Ree too.  US Addresses only please.  Contest will close Saturday, 10/31 at 9pm PST.

Contest is now closed. Thanks to everyone who entered.

My favorite home-style dish is the chicken and dumplings my grandmother has made my family exactly twice (they made quite the impression), but after I made Ree’s mac and cheese last week I might have to change my mind!

Excellent review, I look forward to adding this cookbook to my collection (regardless of the outcome of the giveaway ;) ).

I love Ree’s cooking and photography and how down to earth she is with millions of fans. I have made some of her recipes, but my fave is the “Crash Hot Potatoes” that my 3 year old calls ‘Run Over Potatoes’. Yum.

Just made her chicken parm this past weekend for my husband’s birthday and we think it was one of the best incarnations of that recipe ever!

Love PW and everything she writes – she and her contributors even make the Homeschooling section a good ‘read’ for those of us without kids.

Ree is so great! All that she does is amazing and I recently made her steak with bleu cheese onion sauce and my husband flipped. It is a comfort food I look forward to making again and again. She does really know what men like to eat :)

That is so darn cute that your husband and kids baked for you. I can see why it was a big deal. It’s always nice when your loved ones do something they know you’ll love :)

My favorite home cooked meal is Fettuccine Alfredo. Ree’s recipe is awesome! I always knew there was a missing link when I would make mine at home, but she said to add a little nutmeg and all the sudden I had this million dollar dish on my hands. I love Ree because I really feel like we are just the best of friends that have never met. My boyfriend left for Marine Corps OCS this past summer, right before I discovered who the Pioneer Woman was. Her blog gave me comfort everyday while he was away and on the upside, once he came back, I had a plethora of awesome recipes to try out on him! Thanks Ree!

I love, love, love Pioneer Woman. Her writing style gives me permission to share random tangents in my own blog and I absolutely love how she writes like she’s cooking WITH you, not at you. Personal, witty, unabashedly feminine, she just lets it flow. Not to mention the gorgeous pictures and inspiring recipes…

As for my own favorite comfort food, I’d have to go with my mom’s chicken pot pie. I haven’t blogged about it yet because I haven’t been able to duplicate it!

Ree is the reason why I started cooking and baking after 14 years of marriage where cooking was a dirty word~! : ) I came across her blog through a friend, who was also venturing out in the blog world. Before then, I had never even read a blog.

Her simple directions and very detailed pictures made me think that even I could try a hand at it and thus started my journey of love of cooking and baking. Many many recipes later, with happy and full stomachs, my family and I are grateful for Ree and her willingness to share and encourage.

It is through PW, by the way, is how I have stumbled onto your site and I am loving it! Many of your recipes have already been added to my cooking/baking repertoire and I am looking forward to more!

Thanks for this opportunity to thank and acknowledge you and Ree’s contribution to a newfound love for me!

My favorite homestyle dish would definitely be pretty much any berry crisp… yum. Maybe with a little vanilla ice cream.

My mom used to make homemade macaroni & cheese every Halloween. I try to keep that tradition going but of course it’s never as good as hers. It’s SO good!

(I also can’t recreate her apple crisp or her meatloaf or her Yorhshire pudding…dangit. At least I keep trying!)

I’ve been reading Pioneer Woman since near the beginning of her blogging career. Ree makes me laugh on many days when I don’t feel much like laughing.

I think homemade soups and stews are my favorite meals especially in the winter. Paired with homemade bread fresh out of the oven and life is good.

I’d been hearing about the Pioneer Woman’s blog for YEARS and I never understood:
1. Why people were so in to it
2. That it was just one woman who seemed to be a pro at so many things.
That was because I never actually bothered to visit. That all changed about 2 months ago when I got into Food Blogs and all of a sudden I found myself having the same deep crush on Ree that everyone else has had for years. I feel so stupid for not having visited her world sooner! You described her perfectly when calling her your coach who just wants to see you succeed. She is a true treasure! Thank you for the opportunity to win her book here :)

I love good country cooking. One of my favorite recipes is one I have for Chili, and it is a staple in out house in the colder months. It is not a very hot chili, but mild and very flavorful. I had not heard of Ree before this, but is sounds like she makes the kind of foods I grew up on and have such fond memories of.
