Haiti Relief Support – A Call to Compassion – Giveaway

I am disturbed, burdened, and broken hearted all at once. The images and news coming from Haiti seem so despairing.. it’s just too much for me to take in.  The photos of kids lying in the arms of their parents is just too much for me to take.  They break me and leave me numb.

Our Haitian brothers and sisters need our help. They need our prayers and our resources. This is a call to compassion. Please take a moment, right now, to donate to an established non-profit relief organization. Most of us cannot physically go to Haiti to help, however these relief organizations can. Relief workers and volunteers are the hands and feet of compassion and hope.

I realize there are many worthy organizations helping in Haiti.  However, if you are unsure of where to donate, here is a list of organizations Rob and I are supporting:

Doctors Without Borders

Mercy Corps

World Concern

World Vision

This morning, Ree Drummond – The Pioneer Woman,  is doing a “Different Type of Giveaway”. If you leave a comment on her post, she will donate a dime for every comment.  She will also donate $500 each to 2 Organizations from the comments left on her post.

This blog, Savory Sweet Life, has been such a blessing to me.  Whatever influence this blog has, if any, I would like to use to help those who are in dire need.  In the name of compassion, I am doing a similar giveaway.

I will be donating $1 to every comment left on this post up to $1000.  I will select which non-profit relief agencies to donate to by picking 2 comments below.  Similar to Ree’s giveaway, just leave a comment with positive thoughts along with a relief agency you support.  I will pick 2 winners (at random) Sunday night-9pm PST.   [The winners have been chosen, you can read which agencies received the donations here.]

Thank you for taking the time to read this…together lets help the Haiti Relief Effort for those who cannot help themselves in their greatest time of need, 1 comment/$1 at a time.

A Call To Find A Matching Sponsor 1/15/10: If you are a food / kitchenware company, would you consider matching SSL’s $1000 for Haiti Relief?  If so, please email me at alice@savorysweetlife.com.

Update 1/15/10: Thanks to everyone who left a comment. We made it to $1000.  Feel free to continue to leave your positive thoughts and relief agency preferences in the comment section.  I will be selecting from all the comments on Sunday night.  Meanwhile, be sure to check back as I am updating the links of other Bloggers also raising awareness and funds for Haiti below. – Thanks.

Here is a list I found on MSNBC on organizations providing relief in Haiti including scams you want to avoid.

Alice

UPDATE: More Food Bloggers/Bloggers are also doing similar type of fund raising efforts on their blogs.  Please be sure to visit all of them and leave a comment.  Imagine the difference and support we can make one comment at at time!  If you are a blogger and are doing a similar type of fund raising effort, please let me know and I’ll add your link here.

PS:  Please get the word out there about all these giveaways on Twitter, MySpace, and Facebook.

Have you enjoyed this post, photos, or recipe? Share this post with friends and family using your favorite social media service and support Savory Sweet Life at the same time. Each time you submit (it's free) SSL's content to StumbleUpon and click on the green "I like it!" button, you assist others in discovering Savory Sweet Life and help this site grow. This allows me to continue to do what I love -sharing with you! I hope you've enjoyed your time here today. Thank you so much for supporting this site! :) - Alice

Thank you so much for doing this. I don’t have the money to donate this month. After wracking my brain trying to find a way I could help I sent emails to family asking them to donate to a charity of their choice with whatever they would have put into my birthday present this month rather than give me anything. When I saw that bloggers were starting to do these comment fund raisers, well, there’s another way I can help. I will continue to look for opportunities, too.

Anyway, thanks so much for allowing me to contribute in some way.

Thank you, Alice! I just read that the FBI is suggesting that donations only be made to organizations monitored and rated by CharityNavigator.org and The American Institute of Philanthropy. I know I’ll be giving to Yele, Doctors Without Borders, American Red Cross, and Compassion International…but there are many good ones.

God bless Haiti. Such devastation and sadness.

Thank you so much for doing this. My church supports a children’s orphage in Haiti. We have three church members there now attempting to get back home to family. They are safe. The orphanage is safe for now, thanks be to God. Please pray these sweet children and their caretakers will be taken care of during this time of tragedy surrounding them.

Thank you so much for doing this. My husband and I are in process of adopting two beautiful girls, Islande, 9, and Katiana, 5, from a creche in Port-au-Prince. We’ve been in process nearly three years. The ministry that supports the orphanage, which cares for 130+ kids, is For His Glory Outreach (www.forhisgloryoutreach.org). Praying for the precious people of this country and the aid workers!

Once again, this is another testament to the GOOD that is borne of something so horrible. One special organization, on the ground and making a difference in Haiti, is Heartline Ministries. If anyone is interested in learning more about this group and their immediate needs, please look here:

Thanks Much Alice!!!
