For the record, DESSERTS and NOT diamonds are a girl’s best friend. It’s true -seriously. When I was sent a review copy of Fat Witch Brownies: Brownies, Blondies, and Bars from New York’s Legendary Fat Witch Bakery by Patricia Helding I instantly knew this cookbook and I were meant to be best friends, as in BFF – Brownies Friends Forevahhhh. Perhaps I cannot be objective when reviewing a cookbook entirely dedicated to brownies, blondies, and dessert bars because I am, in fact, obsessed with these sweet treats. If this makes me biased, so be it…I don’t care. I suppose in the spirit of being objective I could try convincing myself this cookbook isn’t’ as awesome as I really do think it is. But why would I do that?! I would be lying to myself which means I would be lying to you.
Here’s the truth. I love this cookbook and for good reasons. Patricia Helding’s voice throughout this cookbook is a breath of fresh air. She writes in such a down to earth tone you instantly like her. How many authors would write, “You might be afraid that if you make one of these recipes you’ll end up eating the whole pan yourself, stopping only to take swigs from a milk carton out of an open fridge. I don’t blame you – they really are that irresistible.” You mean other people sometimes eat a whole pan of brownies to themselves, too? Preach it Patricia… preach it!
I appreciate how the layout of the book is simplistic and clean. The recipes are written in an approachable manner which makes you feel she is right there with you and the head notes are fun, insightful, and personal enough you feel like your friends.
On more occasions than I care to admit I’ve found myself just thumbing through her cookbook just for fun. The photos throughout the book make you wish you could just grab a brownie from the page and devour it – which is what often happens when I eat brownies.
Earlier this week I posted her recipe for Congo Bars which did not last very long in our house! On my list of brownies I want to bake from her cookbook are Hazelnut Cream Cheese Brownies, Cappuccino Brownies, Butterscotch Bars, and Raspberry Brownies with White Chocolate Chips to name a few. Don’t these recipe titles make you want to make and eat them, too?
If you are a brownie fanatic like myself this cookbook is a must-have and would make the perfect gift for anyone who loves baking.
