It is no secret that I’m a visual person. I love learning how to cook with the help of pictures. This is one of the primary reasons why I publish so many step-by-step photos on Savory Sweet Life. I learn best through visual aid and I know other people also do as well. Photos help people visualize a recipe from start to finish and everything in between. So when Phaidon Press sent me a review copy of Jane Hornby’s What to Cook & How to Cook it, I was very excited to see each recipe accompanied by multiple photos to guide the home cook through the entire process. This book is a visually feast for the eyes.
It’s perfect for beginners because it visually walks you through the entire process of a recipe. The photos are retro-trendy and the layout of the book is clean. Home cooks will find confidence in knowing what each dish should look like every step of the way. Here are some images from the Chocolate Truffle Cake recipe from the cookbook. As you can see, each recipe shows the ingredients needed and walks you through each step of making a recipe. Each recipe in the cookbook is presented like this.
The cookbook is a solid collection of straightforward recipes perfect for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and dessert. I would also like to mention that the book is HUGE – I love it!
I would recommend this cookbook to new and aspiring cooks, newlyweds, young people who are living in their first apartment or home, and anyone who prefers a visual approach in learning how to cook. This is the type of cookbook I think would make a great holiday gift.
The wonderful people at Phaidon Press are giving away a copy to three lucky readers. All you need to do is tell me whether or not you’re a visual learner. The contest is open to everyone with a US mailing address. Winners will be chosen Tuesday night, December 7 at 9pms PST by Random.org. Good luck! Contest is now closed.
