Spice Islands – Spiced Roasted Chickpeas

by alice on November 21, 2011 · 16 comments

Throughout the last couple years I have been very fortunate to partner with some fabulous companies here on Savory Sweet Life.  The companies (and their products) I choose to work with are ones I personally love and use regularly, making my partnership with them very enjoyable and easy to share with SSL readers.  I am happy to announce my partnership with Spice Islands – a well known producer of the finest spices from around the world.

One of my most favorite things I would do at the grocery store when I was young was to go down the aisle with the spices and look at all the different varieties or spices and herbs in the Spice Islands bottles with the brown caps.  I was always fascinated with spices and I still am today.  I love experimenting with new recipes using different spices to expand my knowledge for personal enrichment.  Working with Spice Islands is a natural fit for me and I am looking forward to sharing new recipes I’ve created for you to enjoy – starting with this Spiced Roasted Chickpeas. Roasted Pumpkin Seeds Recipe

by alice on October 21, 2010 · 15 comments

[donotprint] When I was a kid my mother would buy one pumpkin for all my five siblings and I to share.  We would take turns carving into it making sure each person had equal time with the small serrated bread knife which was so dull, it was painful.  After a jagged circle was cut out at the top of our pumpkin, someone would scoop the stringy, wet insides out along with the seeds and place them in a bowl.  Mom would quietly take the bowl to the kitchen where she would rinse them, coat them in a little melted butter, and season them with a sprinkle of table salt.  The aroma of pumpkin seeds roasting in the oven filled us with excitement and anticipation as we worked on carving our jack-o-lantern. {My Favorite Fair Food} Kettle Corn

by alice on March 6, 2010 · 78 comments

[donotprint] I know its not summer yet but I don’t care. We’re making homemade kettle  corn at our house and its the perfect salty-sweet snack on a beautiful day like today. Several months ago I posted a caramel corn recipe (Crackerjack) and a company called JustPoppin.com left me a comment. Out of sheer curiosity I replied via email with a very simple question.  “How come my popcorn doesn’t have huge balloon type qualities like the kettle corn I get at the fair?” I was told the variety of popcorn they use at the fair are called “mushroom” kernels. I had always believed the way to get those huge kernels was the kettle cooking method and was happy to learn I could buy the same  mushroom kernels to make kettle corn at home! Truth be told, I love the balloon type variety of kettle corn and was excited to learn the secret behind my misconception. [click to continue…]
