Sunday mornings are for sleeping in and eating brunch. It is the only day of the week where our family isn’t rushing to a basketball game or swim meet. Instead, everyone wakes up when they feel like it and eventually we all congregate in the kitchen. The kids and my husband look forward to a warm hot breakfast where we can sit down and enjoy a family meal at a leisurely pace. It is a nice change to most mornings when we are all trying to get out the door to get the girls to school on time.

As I write this my husband is downstairs putting away Christmas decorations, my kids are playing with their Christmas presents, and I’m still in bed enjoying a morning of sleeping in and reading in bed. It’s hard to believe it was exactly one year ago we were saying our final goodbyes to my dad as he lay at peace in a funeral home. Boy, what a year it has been.
For the last two weeks we’ve been hosting family, parties, and lounging. Christmas Eve with fifty extended family members, Christmas Day with my immediate family, and with no plans for New Year’s Eve other than to enjoy the presence of each other, I’m looking forward for this year of transitions and major life changes to close. Not a day goes when I don’t learn something new about food through the power of social media. Of all the social networks Twitter is my favorite. It is a real-time information social network and micro-blogging site that allows me to share and receive information in 140 characters or less. My husband describes it as a glorified chat-room, but I consider Twitter a gateway to building community and engaging with other people who share similar interests. For me that interest is food.
Connecting with other food bloggers, readers of Savory Sweet Life, and other food enthusiasts has been made easy with Twitter, and is changing the way people publically share information.
My favorite use of Twitter is sharing new-to-me flavors, recipes, ingredients and cooking methods publicly for the sake of building interest in the food community and exchanging information. However, sometimes Twitter can be used for playful banter between friends.
A couple years ago my friend Ashley Rodriguez, another Seattle area food blogger, and I were jokingly tweeting about which of us had the best chocolate chip cookie recipe. As our lively exchange continued, somehow it developed into a very publicized chocolate chip cookie throwdown as other food spectators egged us on. [click to continue…]

The last ten months has been a roller coaster of emotions, major life changes, and everything in between. We bought a new home and sold our old one. The girls started school and my youngest child started his first year of preschool two days a week for two hours a day. Add soccer practices, games, swim team commitments, play dates, and other family outings, by 10 p.m. I’m exhausted. By the time I get the kids to bed the only thing I want to do is watch Mad Men while eating ice cream.
Not a day goes by when someone doesn’t ask me how the unpacking and settling into our new home is going. The truth is, most of our things are still in boxes in the garage. My husband jokingly told me we should just donate all the boxes to charity and start over. I thought he was so silly for even suggesting this in jest a month ago but the idea is becoming more tempting by the day. Living out of boxes does have its privileges. Our house remains pretty clean because there really isn’t much to mess up. Eli’s toys are confined to a 18×18-inch box and most of the rooms are essentially empty. The great thing about living in an empty house is letting the kids and their friends literally run around in circles. I’ve also enjoyed cooking in my new kitchen, much more so than our old house. We moved into our new home two weeks ago and are still living out of boxes. Thank goodness for my husband who is not organizationally challenged like myself. He made sure I had at least a few pots and pans unpacked so we could, at the very least, eat at home
The first meal I made in our new home was one of the most delicious meals I’ve had the pleasure of eating in a long time. It was inspired by a competitive recipe project I was invited to participate in called The Mushroom Masters. I’m representing Team USA’s dinner challenge against Australia and Canada. The recipe? Marsala Mushroom Cream Sauce over Beef Braised Beef and Buttermilk Mashed Potatoes. Hello…. Um, Marsala Mushroom Cream Sauce…. Beef Braised Beef…. and Buttermilk Mashed Potatoes – Glory!!
