cocktails

As I write this my husband is downstairs putting away Christmas decorations, my kids are playing with their Christmas presents, and I’m still in bed enjoying a morning of sleeping in and reading in bed.  It’s hard to believe it was exactly one year ago we were saying our final goodbyes to my dad as he lay at peace in a funeral home. Boy, what a year it has been.

For the last two weeks we’ve been hosting family, parties, and lounging.  Christmas Eve with fifty extended family members, Christmas Day with my immediate family, and with no plans for New Year’s Eve other than to enjoy the presence of each other, I’m looking forward for this year of transitions and major life changes to close. Watermelon Mint Lime Martini

by alice on May 13, 2011 · 24 comments

I’ve never been one to make a cocktail for the reason of “just because.”  But today I’m making an exception because there was half a baby watermelon in my fridge which needed to be used up.  Instead of eating it I felt like making a drink out of it, and let me tell you what a fine drink it is.

Made with vodka and not gin or vermouth, I’m still calling this cocktail a watermelon mint lime martini because… because I feel like it.  And if I sound a little sassy, it’s because I am.  Today was a rough day and I’ll just leave it at that.

I wasn’t planning on writing a post about it but after taking a small sip, I changed my mind because you really  need to make one this weekend if you’re a cocktail type of person.  [click to continue…]

How to Make the Perfect Mint Julep

by alice on June 21, 2010 · 22 comments

Today is the official day of summer. Today we’re kicking off the season with a backyard barbecue and I’m hoping to enjoy one of many long evenings of brilliant sunsets setting the night sky ablaze while sipping on a mint julep. Sounds lovely, doesn’t it?

Mint juleps are considered a Southern cocktail beverage made from bourbon, mint, sugar and water. It is a traditional drink often served at the Kentucky Derby in a tall glass or a pewter julep cup.

What I enjoy most about this beverage is the simplicity of it. We have mint growing like weeds in our backyard. So having all the ingredients readily available makes it very easy to prepare this cocktail on a hot summer day. Dissolving sugar and water into a simple syrup is the best way to prepare this drink. I like to take it one step further by steeping mint leaves in the syrup instead of muddling the mint leaves with ice. The end result is a sweet, refreshing, and strong cocktail! Fall is in full swing in Seattle and in our household. Last night we put a few logs in our wood stove and made a batch of our favorite spiced hot apple cider. I love this recipe because its simple to make yet so good to drink. And for a grown up version, I poured a shot of spiced rum into my husband’s glass which really made for a a delightful warm Fall type cocktail. [click to continue…]
