Dungeness Crab Lemon Basil Pasta

by alice on July 29, 2010 · 24 comments

Fact: I will eat just about any food but my favorite dishes are usually simple to prepare, fresh in flavor, and can be made very quickly. Cooking for me is about being flexible, creative, and resourceful. And I can’t help but be a little proud of myself when I make something so deliciously good with such little amount of effort.

For instance, today’s pasta dish was inspired by Aglio E Olio (warm olive oil and garlic pasta), the bounty of summer cherry tomatoes, fresh basil growing in a tiny plastic pot next to the kitchen window,, and fresh lump Dungeness crab meat to top it all off. The addition of fresh lemon juice brightens everything perfectly. We now have a light summer dinner meal bursting with flavor to delight the palette as well as the stomach. [click to continue…]

Would you believe there are as many teriyaki restaurants as there are Starbucks in Seattle?  Well, maybe not as many but certainly there are a ton.  In fact, there are five of them within 2 miles of my house compared to three Starbucks.  Although teriyaki is Japanese most of the teriyaki restaurants in town are owned by Koreans.  Most of them use similar recipes for their teriyaki sauce and you wouldn’t believe how ridiculously easy it is to make at home.  I should forewarn any purists out there that this recipe is Korean restaurant style and not an authentic Japanese version.  My uncle used to own a deli and we would prepare teriyaki for the lunch hour.  This is where I learned to make teriyaki sauce.  Its sweet in flavor and is a great finishing sauce for any grilled meat or vegetables.  I would also like to disclose right now that this recipe uses garlic powder- I can hear the virtual gasps happening right now as you read this. It is what it is.  [click to continue…]

Steamed Clams in White Wine

by alice on April 8, 2010 · 17 comments

When it comes to clams there are only two camps.  You either really really love them or you really really hate them.  As for me I love clams – always have, always will.  Growing up in the Puget Sound we would go clam digging as kids spending hours looking for those suckers.   At the end of the day my mom would prepare our loot by steaming clams and us kids would slurp the savory broth till the lost drop.  We would collect all the empty shells, wash them (or not wash them), and store them in a secret box as our treasure.  Those were the good old days.  Last time I went clam digging was with my husband before having kids.  Lets just say it wasn’t as nearly as fun as I remember as a kid, but eating them these days is just as comforting and delectable.
