Hello, my name is Alice.  I’m the cook, baker, writer, and photographer of SavorySweetLife.com and the author of the cookbook SAVORY SWEET LIFE: 100 Simply Delicious Recipes for Every Family Occasion (William Morrow/HarperCollins June 2012).  I also write a weekly food column for PBS Parents and host a cooking series on the PBS Digital Studios network featuring great food and authentic interactions from a 3 generational Korean-American family.

I love my family, drink way too much coffee, and keep a secret stash of chocolate (the good stuff!) hidden from my children like every good mom does.  I’ve been married to Rob  for 14 years and have three of the greatest children (Abbi-12, Mimi-11, and Eli-5) a mother could ever have hoped for.  On any given day you can find me  shuttling my kids to and from school, sports practices, and cooking up recipes to share with you.  After everyone has gone to bed, I am often working on blog related things until the wee hours of the morning munching on snacks I probably shouldn’t be.  I love technology, traveling, food culture, eating out with friends, exercising, and quiet meditation through prayer and reflection (Jer. 29:11).

alice-currah-cakes-1 I started this blog as a creative outlet and an expression of many things I enjoyed most in life:  food, photography, and most importantly sharing with others.  When it comes to the recipes on Savory Sweet Life, I prefer to keep it simple, approachable, yet wonderful to eat and enjoy with others.  I launched Savory Sweet Life the last week of February of 2009 and since then my life has never been the same (press mentions).  Two of my blogging career highlights happened in March 2010 when Forbes.com named me as one of “Eight Of The Very Best Bloggers” and shortly after I won Saveur.com’s first ever “Photo Cover Contest.” I love what I do and deeply appreciate everyone who has supported me along the way and continues to do so!

You can also find me writing as a weekly contributor for PBS Parents Kitchen Explorers as well as a regular contributor for The Pioneer Woman’s Tasty Kitchen Blog.

Prior to having children I worked in the design and food service industry.  My background in 3D animation and restaurant experience eventually led me to start my own wedding cake business. Although I no longer do wedding cakes anymore, I still bake and decorate birthday cakes for each of my children.

Hi Alice
I stumbled upon you by accident. I first bought your cookbook and fell in love with it a week ago. It truly is fantastic. I read it cover to cover. Your chapter introductions, as well as, the little “stories” before each recipe are beautiful. I can feel the heart behind each one of your dishes. I am so glad I unintentionally stumbled upon your cooking world. Thanks for sharing your love!

Hi Alice,

Just made your clams in white wine and butter…. sooo delicious and simple. It was the first time I’d made clams and it was your enthusiasm that made me brave to try it. Now, I know how simple it is to make.

Btw, love your biz name!

Thanks, Holly

Hi Alice – I came across your site while looking for frosting recipes, and I can’t wait to try yours. Any advice on making them without milk or cream? My husband is lactose intolerant, although butter doesn’t seem to bother him. I’m thinking of swapping out the dairy milk ingredients for soy milk, but not sure if that will work or if it will be better to do it with the chocolate or vanilla buttercream recipes.

Thanks!

Julie

Hi Alice,

I came across your buttercream frosting recipe as I was searching for something better than what I have made in the past. I loved yours because it has less sugar ( and probably less sweet ) which is exactly what I was looking for. I am planning on using it on my daughter’s wedding cake in 2 months. Do you think it will with stand the heat of an outside wedding reception? We plan to keep it indoors as long as possible. This is my first wedding cake. Thanks for your help.

My wife was making a cake for a coworker last night and needed a recipe for chocolate butter cream frosting. The Google search led me to your page, so we ran with it. I hate butter cream frosting. Any time I’m served the stuff I scrape it off my cake. Until now. Yours is fantastic. I could (and maybe did) eat it with a spoon. I’m a fan and will be back to check your site again. Thanks.

Hello from France,
I am very glad to have found your blog. I was looking for an easy but well reviewed cranberry sauce for our Thanksgiving dinner .
Will be following you and appreciate the time you take to share what you love.
I am not a very confident cook, so I really do need the kind of help and service you provide.

I used your recipe to brine my two turkeys this Thanksgiving. I was a bit scared doing this my first time and for 14 guests. I cannot believe how wonderful the turkeys came out, juicy, flavorful and just melt-in-your-mouth, and so easy! I will ALWAYS brine my turkey from this day forward. Thanks for your set by step instructions!

Hi Alice! I found you…I heard your interview on Splendid Table and wanted your cookbook! I have been trying to figure out your name and the cookbook name. I was in a cooking store today in St Paul, Cooks on Grand, and a woman that works there (that is a researcher by trade) found your information for me, I’m thrilled. I can’t wait to buy your cookbook!
