About Alice

Hello, my name is Alice.  I’m the cook, baker, writer, and photographer of SavorySweetLife.com.  I love my family, drink way too much coffee, and keep a secret stash of chocolate hidden from my children like every good mommy does.  I’ve been married to Rob  for 11 years and have three of the greatest children (Abbi-10, Mimi-9, and Eli-3) a mother could ever have hoped for.  Each day I manage our household as a stay-at-home mom.  On any given day you can find me  shuttling my kids to and from school, sports practices, and cooking up recipes to share with you.  After everyone has gone to bed, I am often working on blog related things until the wee hours of the morning munching on snacks I probably shouldn’t be.  You should also know I have a personal blog called Everyday Alice.  You won’t find recipes there but you will find a word of encouragement from musings about life, parenting, and self-reflections through a faith perspective.

Converse Shoe Cake for my nephew, Isaiah

I started this blog as a creative outlet and an expression of many things I enjoyed most in life:  food, photography, and most importantly sharing with others.  When it comes to the recipes on Savory Sweet Life, I prefer to keep it simple, approachable, yet wonderful to eat and enjoy with others.  I launched Savory Sweet Life the last week of February of 2009 and since then my life has never been the same (press mentions).  Two of my blogging career highlights happened in March 2010 when Forbes.com named me as one of “Eight Of The Very Best Bloggers” and shortly after I won Saveur.com’s first ever “Photo Cover Contest.” I love what I do and deeply appreciate everyone who has supported me along the way and continues to do so!

You can also find me writing as a weekly contributor for PBS Parents Kitchen Explorers as well as a regular contributor for The Pioneer Woman’s Tasty Kitchen Blog.

Littlest Petshop Birthday Cake

Prior to having children I worked in the design and food service industry.  My background in 3D animation and restaurant experience eventually led me to start my own wedding cake business. Although I no longer do wedding cakes anymore, I still bake and decorate birthday cakes for each of my children.

I came across your website when looking for an easy but stand-out recipe for cranberry sauce. I found and used yours and instantly became hooked on your site.

I love the ease of your recipes – from the explanations and the photos you provide of the steps are excellent. You captured what every working housewife needs in a virtual recipe site!

Keep up the good work; I will be sharing your site with all of my friends!

What a precious picture of your little princess and her birthday cake. That looks like it took quite a bit of time and effort; good for you, mom!

Alice, I made your chicken marsala last night. I have made several different recipes of this dish because my daughter loves mushrooms. My husband said that this version was his favorite and I must add that it was the easiest recipe that I have made of this dish. Your neighbor in Poulsbo.

You people that do these blogs are all so very talented, so artistic and creative. I have quite a few of you set up on “My Yahoo” page. I will be making your spinach stuffed portobellos. Of course I will remove the gills without question, that is how you prep a portobello, always.

Dear Alice!

I stumbled upon your site from doing research about my own. I have just started up my own food blog based on the same ideas as you, trying to improve my cooking skills from the home cook perspective.

The plan is to test out recipes from amazing food bloggers around the world and see how easy they are for your everyday weeknight meals. I will definitely be trolling through your site for great recipes to try and link through to from my own.

Can’t wait!

Hi Janice,
The dish is a photo I took of a paella recipe I made from Pam Anderson’s newest cookbook, Perfect One Dish Dinners. I recently did a review of the cookbook and shot this photo but the recipe is not on my site. You may want to do a Google search for Pam’s recipe or find it in the cookbook.

I just found your site today while looking for a good buttercream icing recipe. I love your instructions on decorating cupcakes with icing flowers. It was my first effort and with your help they looked great! I am so impressed with your creativity and how much you achieve with three kids! I have four girls and love to bake for them more than anything. Thanks for being an inspiration!

Hi, Alice. I’m an avid at-home and recently came up with a cake idea but needed to find a good buttercream base (I tend to use a lot of cream cheese frostings normally). That search led me to your buttercream post which was super helpful, especially since you even explained why someone would choose shortening instead of butter (no thanks!) I’m now a Facebook fan and am sure I’m about to invest hours of my life into catching up on all of your past blog posts!

Hi there Alice. I stumbled upon your blog 2 days ago and I love your blog so far and you are an inspiration to me. I am trying my hands at baking few months ago and so far I have been baking the kind of recipes that my kids enjoy such as chocolate chip cookies, butter cake, tiramisu, cupcakes but the satisfaction is endless when you see your ‘work’ being enjoyed. Hopefully I will gain more confidence in trying out more complicated recipes soon. Cheers.

Hi Alice,
I found your blog on the Pioneer Woman’s website. I love Bree’s food and her food photos, and I am thoroughly enjoying reading your blog.

I love to cook, have a cookbook collection of over 150 titles, and am doing a family cookbook with my aunt this year. I’m getting great inspiration from cooking blogs like yours. I want to do a book that everyone will want to use and will contain old photographs, original recipe cards in the handwriting of family members–some who are no longer with us, photographs of the recipes and of our family. I’m also going to include some family history and favorite stories. I’ve seen some websites that will publish full color books for under $20 each with no minimum.

I haven’t started my own blog, yet, but my husband has been encouraging me to do one. I have physical issues that keep me from working, so I have lots of time on my hands. I wasn’t able to cook for a few years because of lack of energy. I’m feeling better after moving back to my native North Carolina from Chicago. My husband and I loved Chicago, but the cold winters and distance from family were rough on both of us. Now that I’m back home in the sunshine and feeling better, I’m looking forward to breaking out my cookbook collection and experimenting again. I am cooking a great lunch for my mom for Mother’s Day–pork tenderloin with a tomato tarragon cream sauce (my mom isn’t a huge meat lover, so I’m substituting pork tenderloin which she loves for bone in chops), potato gratin with cream and fresh herbs (Epicurious.com, but I use less heavy cream and add cheese and sometimes bacon depending on our mood), and bacon balsamic green beans (I commented on your green beans with maple, dijon and pecans and left the recipe since it’s a favorite of everyone I’ve made it for). Since it’s strawberry season, we’re having a genoise with local strawberries and fresh whipped cream. –Both the pork and genoise recipes are from “French by Carole Clements and Elizabeth Wolf Cohen” . I am enjoying having more people to cook for, although my husband has always been very appreciative of my efforts and shares my interest in food and cooking. He makes the best homemade pie crust (he loves it and I don’t so he makes the crusts when he wants me to make him a pie) and chiffon cake–on the first try, no less, something that took me years to master.

I also love to sew and do artsy things like painting, beading, and other arts and crafts–I’m currently working on lamp shades, custom tissue boxes, and altering a black linen sun dress I found at a thrift store. I find so much variety and ideas on blogs like yours.

Thanks for taking the time out of your busy schedule to share your loves with people you don’t know. I love reading about other peoples’ lives and loves and find encouragement in their passions.

Hi Alice!

So pleased to see your recipe for croutons pop up as the top selection on Google today (Hubby is making my Mother’s Day dinner and was wondering how to make them …. I figured it was just easier to print out the recipe than tell him how…much less do it myself!).

And then I eased over to your home page. You had me at roasted tomato feta scones…. and green beans with bacon and pecans! Completely excited to find your blog and go exploring later on tonight. After the kids go to sleep. And the husband. And probably the fish, too.

Happy Mother’s Day!

It’s so good to finally meet you, Alice! I just googled “best chocolate chip cookie recipe” because that’s just something I do, bake a lot, and my son adores chocolate chip cookies. I happened upon your blog and chocolate chip cookie recipe. So, I was really excited to make them, like right now! BUT… when I was printing out the recipe, I noticed that it said something about “Alice’s best chocolate chip cookie” at the bottom of the recipe. What, how could that possibly be? Here, all along, for the last few years, I have been making YOUR RECIPE, and everyone adores it! So, I click on your bio, to learn who and where this cookie recipe that I love comes from!

What’s really funny is, I have NO IDEA where I even got this recipe! I’d say possibly one of my favorite blogs, maybe howsweeteats.com or Kevinandamanda.com, or maybe it was the Pioneer Woman, not sure. Don’t ask me to explain myself, and I’m not sure why I would even be looking for another chocolate chip cookie recipe, when I already have THE BEST ONE! I do love recipes, and I love to try new things too, but now I am left to bake, none other than, your cookie recipe… again. I do agree, it is the best one! Since I do love this recipe, it’s probably time for me to add another blog to my “favorites” and start searching your posts for more yummy recipes. Thank you, Alice!
