United Way Hunger Challenge Day 3 – Wholesome Breakfast $1.44 for a family of 5

Last update: July 19, 2016 By Alice Currah 3 Comments

oatmeal

This morning was crazy.  Everyone was running around with their heads cut off trying to make it to work and school on time.  However each person managed to eat breakfast (all at different times – of course!).    I had already decided this morning that I was going to eat oatmeal.  The weather is wet, gray, and typical for Seattle so oatmeal would be a natural fit.  I love oatmeal.  It’s inexpensive ($.10/serving) , full of fiber, 100% whole grains, and can be dressed up to satisfy any palette.  After asking everyone what they wanted to eat for breakfast I only had 1 person who defected from the pack.  What can I say my daughter loves eggs.  So today’s breakfast was oatmeal for 4 ($.40) with brown sugar ($.08), walnuts ($.25) and a banana ($.18), and raisins ($.05).  My daughter also had a fried egg ($.12), a piece of toast ($.20), and 1 glass of oj ($.16).  Total cost for breakfast $1.44.

I’ll be reporting back later for the rest of today’s meals.

I like to put peanut butter and brown sugar in my oatmeal. Nuts and bananas sounds really good.
