I am going to be real and raw with you tonight. I’m a desperate woman this evening. I am in dire need of a late night sweet thang (<-and no that is not a typo). If you are familiar with my blog at all, I ask for your forgiveness in advance. There will not be the usual food porn you are accustomed to seeing on my blog in this post. I replaced my original photo with this one because frankly I’ve come to my senses and food porn is only good porn when shot right. When I say food porn, I mean a term used by food bloggers describing drool worthy photos of food. Instead I am posting candid photos as it happened. But I have a feeling you’ll forgive me after making this special treat. Don’t you agree this is a much better photo? Doesn’t it make you want to eat it through the screen?
I didn’t intend to write a post on my sweet thang. But because I love sharing and you are my friend I will share my dirty late night secret with you as long as you promise to share it with others. Some of you are probably familiar with the 5 minute mug chocolate cake mug floating around the internet. If you’ve tried that recipe you know it is really awful (REALLY AWFUL!). But what I have for you… is simply amazing. What I’ve made for myself out of sheer desperation for needing to satisfy my late night sweet tooth is an apple crisp a la mode made for one person (me!) in the microwave with the added help of a frying pan. I wish so much you were here to enjoy this with me but unfortunately its only for 1 person and that person at the moment is ME! Too bad you aren’t here to taste it because it is really really good. But instead I give you my recipe. Now do yourself a favor and make one too. This will revolutionize your late-night desperate dessert routine. And by the way, you’re welcome! Enjoy!
Alice’s 10-minute Apple Crisp Recipe
Ingredients:
Filling-
1 apple, peeled and thickly sliced
3 tablespoons sugar
½ teaspoon cinnamon
¼ teaspoon nutmeg
½ teaspoon cornstarch
Crisp Topping-
1 ½ tablespoons butter
2 tablespoons brown sugar
2 tablespoons oats
2 tablespoons flour
½ teaspoon cinnamon
Directions:
Starting with the crisp topping: Heat a small frying pan on med-high and cook/fry the all the ingredients for the crisp topping mixture until it is a darkened golden brown making sure to constantly stir so it doesn’t burn (approx. 3 min). Remove from heat and set aside.
In a small mixing bowl combine sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cornstarch. Add sliced apples and with your hand, massage the dry ingredients into the slices until all the dry mix is used up. Place apple mixture in a microwavable cereal bowl, cover with plastic wrap (folding some of it back to vent it), and microwave for 4 minutes. Remove from microwave and add crisp topping and gently press it down into the apple mixture with the back of a spoon. Place the bowl back in the microwave and heat for 30 seconds. Remove from microwave and allow to cool for 2-3 minutes. Top off with vanilla ice cream and enjoy!

I came across this when looking for a apple crisp for 1. It was so good and easy to make, the crumble on top was so crispy. The taste was great and I will make this again.

1o minutes, eh? I set the timer and gave myself a Quick-Fire Challenge and .. failed. But it was quick and I had fun. Going to share the bowl with my husband or I won’t be able to sleep with a sugar high. Yeah, it’s that sweet!

Oh I love this recipe! I am a fiend for any kind of fruit crisp. And all in just 10 minutes, that is great. Here where I live in Kyoto I don’t have access to a real oven so I can’t bake like this. Boo hoo. Thanks for sharing!

You are so right, it is all about the photo. I hate when I’ve made something tasty but got crap pictures of it… hard to decide whether or not to even post it. I’ve made something roughly like this before too but I think yours is better; I’m all about figuring clever ways to use the microwave to produce real food especially in those late-night crises.

Ohh, it’s nice to hear I’m not the only one craving something sweet at night! And in only 10 minutes – heaven!

Ok, this is officially a danger zone for me. You have honed in on my biggest weakness! I adore apple desserts of any kind, but apple crisp and apple pie are tied for my favorite desserts of all time. This recipe is so great. If you hear someone knocking at your door late at night it might be me checking to see if you are making this!

What a perfect idea! I LOVE apple crisp, but in a pinch I don’t want to peel and slice pounds of apples to make it happen. This one will be tried post haste 🙂

Alice, this is seriously some food pr0n! And I know you are NOT teasing me with such a simple and yummalicious recipe! If this can be made in my microwave, heck, it needs to be made by me ASAP. Will tell you how it turns out!
Great post, Alice. And your photos are seriously really, really good!

Oh, this looks great! I found this on Tastespotting.
I LOVE that you call the photos “food porn” as well!!
When I first found Tastespotting, that is what I would call it when I would tell other foodies about it.
Good to know the term is in use out there!!!

The photo is beautiful and the apple crisp must really be something. It’s one of my favorite desserts. If I can make it in ten minutes, I’ll definitely be eating it more often.

That photo is gorgeous! I didn’t see the other ones though, but now I’m curious about them!

I’ve been doing apple crisps for one lately. I’m like you, when I have a sweet attack I have to have it right away. When I mix the topping I melt the butter. It results in a crispier topping when I bake in the over. This one looks so yummy!

Great minds think alike. I made something along the same topping scope…will share soon. Just came out of the oven and I now read your post. Had I seen this sooner I would have made yours too!

I made this tonight with a couple of variations. I used pear and Asian pear for the fruit; 1 t. flour instead of cornstarch; cinnamon, ginger, and clove; threw a few walnuts into the oat mixture; and used demerera sugar (and reduced by half). I baked it off in a toaster oven. So really, I did lots of changes, which just demonstrates that it’s a great template recipe! It was a yummy, warm treat, and 10 minutes start to finish.

I made this tonight and I love it. I was considering eating chocolate chips by the handful until I saw this post. The topping is incredibly crunchy! I never thought of frying it first, but it so good this way. I cut back on the sugar – my sweet tooth is not as sweet now (ever since I gave up candy last May).
Thanks for the recipe!

HAH! Raw and real…I love it. Isn’t it funny the concoctions we do up for ourselves late at night?! Usually mine are much less gourmet and involve spoonfuls of peanut butter–this looks awesome. Funny post.

Oh my! I love this. Definitely one to try =D.

If loving that is wrong, then i don’t wanna be right! Thanks for this.

With this recipe in the repertoire, I will no longer stare blankly into the fridge while wondering what to eat when a sweet craving strikes at night. Thank you, lady!

This sounds delicious. I think I’d throw some cranberries in there too like your last recipe. Seems a bit healther then the five minute microwave cake recipe circulating all over, which is delicious, too!

It’s about 11 at night right now and I think this is the midnight snack that I have been waiting for.

Oh!! I can’t wait to try this! I love baking but it’s so hard not to eat everything when I’m at home by myself… thank you!
