Finally, 3 overly ripe bananas managed to remain in my fruit basket without my husband throwing them out into the compost. You see, he doesn’t understand that those blackish-brown bananas are the star ingredient to super yummy banana bread. Typically, he will throw them out before I even get an opportunity to make anything out of them. He finds them disgusting. Not this time! These bananas were hiding under a bag of pretzels, yeah for me! So this afternoon I thought I would make banana bread with these bad boys. Not just any banana bread either. Sour cream chocolate chocolate chip banana bread! Are you feeling me? Can I get an Amen!?
After pulling the loaves out of the oven, my kids and I devoured one within 5 minutes. This is probably the best banana bread I have ever had. I even tweaked my own recipe and it turned out amazing. I’ll take a slice of this bread over cake any day!
Because I used mini chocolate chips, you could see and taste little bits of melted chocolate in each bite. And the banana bread was incredibly rich and moist. Like the weirdo I am, I felt compelled to put a pat of butter on each slice (yes I ate 3 slices), not that it needed it. I’m a butter addict, what can I say?
I’m pretty sure you’re not interested in my butter addiction so here you go, the recipe for this yummy chocolate banana bread. Enjoy
- 1 stick of salted butter, softened to room temp.
- ½ cup sugar
- 1 egg
- 2 large ripened bananas mashed ( or 2.5 small bananas)
- 1 tsp. vanilla
- 1 cup flour
- 1 tsp. baking soda
- 2 Tbl. cocoa powder
- ½ cup of sour cream
- 1 cup of mini chocolate chips (regular chocolate chips work too)
- optional ½ cup of chopped walnuts
- Preheat over to 350 degrees.
- Lightly grease a 9x5 loaf pan, or 2 mini pans with non-stick spray.
- In a large bowl, cream butter and sugar together. Stir in egg, mashed bananas, sour cream, and vanilla until well blended.
- Add baking soda, cocoa, and flour.
- Mix everything until well incorporated (about 3 minutes in a Kitchenaid mixer).
- Add chocolate chips and nuts (if applicable).
- Pour batter into loaf pan(s) and bake for 50 minutes - 1 hr.
- Insert a tooth pick into the center of the loaf and check to see if it comes out clean when you pull it out.
- Remove from heat and allow bread to rest in the loaf pan for 10 minutes.
- Invert the loaf pans onto a cooling rack. Enjoy warm or cold.

Let me start off by saying my husband loves dessert but is quite picky. He ate 3 pieces of this in one sitting, got up and had one more piece for breakfast and a couple days later finished the loaf. He then tells me that he needs this on a weekly basis. I think it is delicious as well! Thank you and it couldn’t be any easier!

I’m always looking for a decadent dessert-like breakfast and knew I had to try this wonderful delight! It was so delicious! There’s nothing worse than dry banana bread and the chocolate chips seemed to be key in preventing that–everyone adored it.

I’ve never been able to make a good banana bread until I tried this recipe.

It turned out perfect and tastes so good!

I just made this yesterday, its great. Everyone who’s tried it loves it. I used 2.5 small bananas, but next time i will throw in the extra half because the chocolate flavor sometimes overwhelms the banana. Its still excellent, though! Thank you Alice!

I don’t really even like banana bread but I thought this might be a good variation. I have to say it’s the moistest and best banana bread I’ve ever tried. And while I’m not a huge fan of bananas, everyone who tried it loved it.The only thing I changed was adding an extra banana because I didn’t want it to go to waste. I really do believe this is the best banana bread I’ve ever had. Thanks so much!

I e-mailed on an earlier date about trying your Chocolate Banana Chocolate Chip Bread with lower cholesterol and lower saturated fat ingredients…Just wanted to let you know that your recipe is awesome! I have passed the recipe on to several family members and I make a loaf now once a week! Yum! I can’t wait to try some of your other recipes now too. 😉

My loaf just came out of the oven and it is PERFECT! There is almost no describing how utterly delicious it is. This is not only a keeper for me but a new favorite, thank you so much for sharing!!

I made this recipe for your chocolate banana chocolate chip bread today because the bananas my husband and I get to eat always get too ripe before we can eat them all. I don’t like throwing them out so I thought I’d give this a try. However, I changed my lifestyle way of eating to include a heart healthy diet and I took up cardiovascular exercise. So, for over a year ago now I have lost and managed to keep off 70 lbs. So, I have substituted some of your ingredients so that the recipe is low cholesterol and lower in saturated fat. I am anxious to see how the recipe turns out. I do all my recipes this way. But if anyone is interested in my recipe “tweaking,” they can let me know, and I would be glad to assist them.

Had 2 ripe bananas and half a cup of sour cream in the fridge. This is a perfect recipe for using them up, thanks! The loaf came out well except that the bottom stuck a bit coz I was too lazy to line my steel tin. I ate the warm bits with a spoon right out of the tin, lovely!

After discovering your post, and watching my bananas get browner and browner, I finally made this bread. When my very picky fiance came home, he said, why did you have to make chocolate banana bread? Well, he took some for lunch, and he loved it! This one goes into the recipe box. Thanks!

OK so I saw this recipe and I have been tinkering with the idea of combining chocolate and bananas together and I already know these two go great together but in a banana bread, you have peaked my interest. If I do say so I make a superb banana bread stand alone but I think you may have just beat me in this one. Will try and let you know!
Thank you for sharing 🙂

SOUR CREAM CHOCOLATE BANANA BREAD: If you think this looks and sounds too decadent, wait until you taste it ! You better have 911 on your re-dial. I just made this today and ate 1/4 of it before I let anyone else get near it. No nead for a pat of butter, it did just fine by itself. I used a 9×5 loaf pan and baked it for 50 min. @ 350. I also use semi-sweet Ghiradelli chocolate chips. YUMMY mmmmmmmmmmmmmm …please give it try. Your friends and family will be begging you to make more.

Don’t worry I found this on the net which pretty much covers it I think
1 stick of butter = 1/2 cup
1 stick of butter = 8 tablespoons
1 stick of butter = 4 ounces
1 stick of butter = 113 grams
So will be trying this cake this weekend (yum) 🙂

This looks seriously good but being in Australia we don’t buy butter in ‘sticks’ so I have no idea what quantity you are talking about. Can you please tell me how much butter (in grams) is in a ‘stick’ of butter?
Can’t wait to try this; it looks soooooo good

I’ve had chocolate chip banana bread, but not double-chocolate banana bread. I have to try this.
